Using a Twitch viewer count in OBS

A viewer-count overlay is useful when the number supports the story of the stream—for example during an event, collaboration, or milestone. It polls Twitch at a measured interval, so it will not change every second and may briefly differ from the Twitch player.

Setup

  1. Enter the broadcaster login shown in the Twitch channel URL, not the display name with spaces.
  2. Choose a readable size and test it against both the brightest and darkest scenes you use.
  3. Copy the generated URL into an OBS Browser Source and match the source dimensions to your canvas.

Best practices

  • Avoid making the number the largest element unless audience growth is the purpose of the broadcast.
  • Use a transparent background for normal scenes and a solid test color while positioning.
  • Keep the source active only when needed to reduce network requests in complex scene collections.

Troubleshooting

  • A zero can mean the channel is offline; confirm the channel is live before diagnosing the overlay.
  • If the name cannot be resolved, copy the lowercase login directly from twitch.tv.
  • Refresh the Browser Source cache after changing URL parameters in an existing OBS source.
