Displaying Discord activity with appropriate permissions
Discord overlays can show voice presence or selected chat activity after the server owner authorizes the integration and chooses a channel. Only display information that server members reasonably expect to appear on a public stream.
Setup
- Authorize the Discord account with access to the intended server.
- Install or configure the bot only with the permissions required for the chosen channel type.
- Generate the private overlay URL, add it to OBS, and test with consenting server members.
Best practices
- Use a dedicated on-stream channel so private server activity cannot appear accidentally.
- Tell participants when names, avatars, voice status, or messages may be broadcast.
- Remove the bot and revoke the connection when a temporary event is over.
Troubleshooting
- An empty server list means the authorized account lacks manageable servers.
- Voice state requires the bot to be online and able to view the selected channel.
- If messages stop, confirm the channel was not renamed, deleted, or moved behind new permissions.
