Designing a readable stream chat overlay
An on-screen chat should support the conversation without covering gameplay or exposing messages longer than necessary. The overlay connects to supported public chat systems and can render platform emotes, badges, commands, and message fade timing.
Setup
- Select the platform and enter the public channel login.
- Choose message size, fade duration, badge visibility, and filters in the preview.
- Place the generated Browser Source in a safe area and send test messages before the broadcast.
Best practices
- Limit the visible message count on vertical layouts and small canvases.
- Filter common bot commands so automated responses do not dominate the screen.
- Keep moderation active on the source platform; the overlay is a display, not a moderation queue.
Troubleshooting
- If messages stop, verify the channel chat is reachable in a normal signed-out browser.
- Third-party emotes can appear later than native emotes while provider catalogs load.
- A transparent source can look blank in OBS until a new message arrives.
