Building reliable countdown and count-up scenes

A browser timer is ideal for starting-soon screens, breaks, challenges, and speedrun-style segments. Its URL records the mode and start reference so the same countdown can be rendered consistently when OBS reloads the page.

Setup

  1. Choose countdown or stopwatch and set the initial duration.
  2. Configure the end behavior, typography, background, and alignment.
  3. Copy the URL to OBS and test a short run including the moment it reaches zero.

Best practices

  • Use tabular numerals to prevent the overlay width from shifting every second.
  • Leave extra width for hours if a segment can run longer than planned.
  • Create separate saved sources for recurring show segments instead of editing a live URL.

Troubleshooting

  • A timer that restarts whenever a scene opens may have Shutdown source when not visible enabled.
  • Check the computer clock if two machines show different positions.
  • Refresh the source after replacing its URL; resizing alone will not restart the timer.
